Mani Monday: Midnight Leopard & Handpainted Tortoiseshell

Dear Nail Diary,

Double post!
I did both my mom's (as she's been bugging me) and my own over the weekend.  I've been practicing making prints with my new nail art tools.  I'll start with mine...
I'm not really a fan of animal print, but I really like the effect of this mani.

I started off with two coats of Barry M - Indigo over my base coats - I did two as this is a highly pigmented mani!  Using a makeup sponge, I then created a gradient of Barry M - Retro Purple, Crabtree & Evelyn - Blueberry (which I'm going to have to you on its own one day because it's the the beautiful shade) and Nails Inc - Black Taxi.  Next I applied OPI - Matte Topcoat, to create a contrast with the leopard print I did on top.  Once I was sure the topcoat was dry enough, I took a dotting tool (or you can use a hairgrip), dipped it in the Black Taxi and made small dotted round-ish shapes, randomly across each of my nails to create the leopard print effect.

I think I should have used a lighter blue for the gradient, as it doesn't show up as much as I would like.  I'm happy with the overall effect, though.

My mom's mani is probably one of the more complicated ones I've attempted.  It was the first time I'd tried this technique and I didn't have the colours I wanted so I had to mix them.

I followed the tutorial on one of my favourite nail blogs - Chalkboard Nails, and created my own version.  Considering I didn't have any Jelly polishes or anything close to the shades she used I'm more than pleased with the end result and so is my mom.

Mom thought it looked like a wood grain pattern which I think is even cooler than the tortoiseshell and she's already had compliments!
